Hello
Gentle Reader
The
New Voice Award, hosted by PEN International, has released its shortlist for
twenty-fifteen. The award itself promotes new writing in the countries in which
the PEN International operates. It is an encouraging award, for new writers to
continue writing and for their work to be accepted, and recognized. This year’s
judges are: Drago Jančar, Zakariya Amataya, Juan Tomás Ávila Laurel, Edwige-Renée
Dro, Yann Martel, and Ogla Tokarczuk: who initially drew to me this award, in
hopes of finding more information about the possibility of her more of her work
being translated in English (so far nothing.) The award winner will be
announced at the 81st PEN International Congress, being hosted in Québec.
Despite their being a lack of further translations coming into English for Olga
Tokarczuk, her presence here in Canada is welcomed of course.
The
following are the shortlisted authors and the title of their short stories:
Lea
Sauer (language: German), short story: “Nichts kurz vor der Rue Saint-Blaise,”
English translation: “Nothing Just Before the Rue Saint-Blaise.”
Sophie
Prévost (Language: French), short story: “Ailleurs,” English Translation: “Elsewhere,”
Rebecca
F John (Language: English; but belongs to Wales PEN)
The award will be presented on October 14th
by Yann Martel.
Congratulations
to these three writers!
