Kjell Espmark, Dies Aged 92

Hello Gentle Reader,

One of the long serving members of the Swedish Academy, Kjell Espmark (Chair No. 16) has died at the age of 92. Espmark had served for forty years with the Swedish Academy, from his admittance in vestiture on December 20, 1981. Since his induction to the Swedish Academy, Kjell Espmark proved to be a formidable force, due to his workhorse ethic, which is learly seen with Espmark publishing numerous articles well into his nineties. Beyond being an accomplished literary academic, critic, and member of the Swedish Academy, Kjell Espmark wrote novels and poetry in turn, debuting in the mid-50’s with a debut collection of poetry, which was followed up by two further collections. Kjell Espmark’s creative endeavors were noted for their allegiance to social issues and concerns, employing a first-person narrator in his poetry collections, which are separate from the poet. Espmark’s maintained his intensely social preoccupations, with his monumental “Late in Sweden,” trilogy, employing realistic techniques and vernacular language to explore existential constraints and confines of the individual within society. Espmark’s prose maintain an equal critical eye to the social situations of Sweden, with his famous series of novels: “The Time of Forgetfulness,” Espmark incorporated a chorus of distinct and diverse voices to meld into a monologue of Sweden, providing a diverse spectrum of the Nordic nation’s social reality. During the 2018 Nobel Prize for Literature scandal, Espmark was one of the members who voluntarily stepped back from participating in the academy’s work, along with Peter Englund and Klas Östergren. Espmark and Englund did return to their seats with the academy, while Klas Östergren resigned permanently. Kjell Espmark has been a resounding figure within the Swedish Academy and one of its oldest members.

Rest in Peace Kjell Espmark.
