Man Booker International Prize Winner 2016

Hello Gentle Reader

The now revamped Man Booker International Prize has awarded its first writer and translator for a single work of fiction, translated into English. This year’s award was diverse, from international heavy weights, to writers beginning to establish themselves. This year’s shortlist included such well-known names as, Italy’s Elena Ferrante and Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk. The longlist itself, held such writers as Karl Ove Knausgaard (KnausgÃ¥rd) and Clarice Lispector. Yet this year’s winner went to the South Korean writer Han Kang for her uncanny novel “The Vegetarian.”

This year’s judges praised Han Kang for her novel “The Vegitarian,” which is written with, “lyrical and lacerating prose,” as well as her ability to keep the narrative above sentiment, melodramatic, or even from diverging into crude horror. The end result, a social remark on what binds an individual to their family, home, and societal conventions; along with the disastrous repercussions a simplistic decision can make.

Han Kang and her young translator Deborah Smith will split the prize money of £50,000.

This comes at a unique time though. South Korea has being pushing for its work to reach greater foreign language markets, and the results are beginning to show with greater Korean works being published in English.

Congratulations to Han Kang for winning this year’s Man Booker International Prize!
