Hello Gentle Reader
The Camões Prize is the most lucrative and most prestigious Portuguese language literary prizes; with a prize amount at one hundred thousand Euros. Since its inception in Nineteen-eighty nine, the Prize has honored many renowned Portuguese language writers including: Jose Saramago Sophia del Mello Breyner, and Mia Couto. Last year’s winner was Alberto da Costa e Silva a Brazilian poet, historian and former diplomat. This year’s winner is Helia Correia, a Portuguese novelist, poet and playwright. Helia Correia father was a anti-fascist, and was taken by Salazar’s regime; for most of her life Correia lived under the fascist dictatorship of Salazar. She studied Romance Philology in University and was a high school teacher; publishing her poems in early periodicals and magazines before writing her first novel in Nineteen-eighty one. Helia Correia has also reinterpreted Greek myths and turned them into theatrical performances – generally the new revisions are the women’s perspective of the myth. Being one of Portugal’s most renowned writers, Correia is not known in English or translated either. However hopefully the prize will change that.
Congratulations to Helia Correia
